Maupin Area Cycling Routes
With plenty of low traffic pavement your South Wasco County two wheel tour is only limited by your imagination and the quality of your maps. That said some of the most popular routes and most helpful outside resouces are listed below.
Maupin to Sherar's Falls: 18 miles round trip
Start at the Imperial River Company, ride down river past city park on Bakeoven road. Turn Left on Deschutes River Road and ride down the river as far as you like. Keep your eyes pealed for herons, otters and jumping trout.
Tygh Valley Loop: 26.6 miles
Start at the Imperial River Company riding out of the parking lot towards the bridge. Take a right on 197 and go across the bridge and up the hill through Maupin. Continue on 197 for another 8.5 miles to Tygh Valley. Take a right on 216 (Sherar’s Bridge Road) and continue for 7.5 miles across Sherar’s Falls Bridge. Turn right on Deschutes River road just after the bridge and peddle the 9 miles back to the lodge. Click here to see a route map and more detailed description.
Bakeoven Out and Back: 46 miles
Starting at the lodge go north on Bakeoven road (away from the bridge.) Take a deep breath and get ready to climb. You will need to climb 1500 ft. in the next 2.5 miles before you reach anything approaching flat. The highest point of the ride is 3500 ft. 3 miles prior to the turn around at the 197 intersection. For those of you willing to brave some traffic there is a great summer only ice cream shop in Shaniko, two miles north on 197. Click here for a route map.
More Resources:
Race Across Oregon - This organization has adopted Maupin for it's Ring of Fire race and Deschutes Time Trial Festival. They have very detailed information on all of their Maupin area race routes.
Sherman County Bike Route - The folks over in Sherman County have put together a great cycling route through their wheat field and wind farms. They have one of the clearest maps that I have seen in a while.
Maupin Chamber of Commerce - Brief, they have a couple of common variations to the above listed routes.
